Spring Clean Your Mind

We all do (or should do) spring cleaning in our office, cars and homes. In January we all attempt to get back into shape for a month. On the weekends we chill out. But how often do we purposefully examine the most powerful motivator and decision maker in our lives?

If you’re unsure why you should give your brain attention, here are two reasons to consider:

The average brain is believed to generate up to 50,000 thoughts per day.

The hippocampus, the part of the brain considered the “memory center,” is significantly larger in London cab drivers. This is due to the mental workout they get while navigating the 25,000 streets of London.

Our brains are incredibly clever and creative, but just like your body, need constant exercise to achieve peak performance. Do these three steps for a mental reboot to give yourself a fresh outlook and a new perspective.

1. Change your mental conversation.

When you think of where you want to be, what words do you use to describe how you’re going to get there? Do you ‘need’ items in your life to feel fulfilled? Do you think of yourself and your abilities in positive or negative terms?

Your internal thoughts become external actions. Recognizing when you are encouraging and discouraging yourself internally can boost your outward performance and appearance.

2. Unplug from the negative.

Most of us need to be online daily in today’s business world. Attending events, trainings and trade shows can help you grow personally and professionally, while building your business and connecting you in your community. There’s a lot of great things happening out there.

3. Connect with a friend (or make a new friend.)

Our friends offer support and advice and motivation. While you may want to seclude yourself at home after a long week of dealing with people, enjoying the company of a friend, or opening yourself up to a new friend, can relieve stress and center your mental energy.
